Rigging Your Ride for Success

By Mike Thull

The day and age of a fisherman going out fishing, armed with their favorite rod and a small tackle box is starting to become a thing of the past. The modern day fisherman is bringing more and more equipment out with them after every trip to the sporting goods store. I am guilty as charged when it comes to packing as much equipment as I can on a trip. If I could get the plumbing situation figured out I’m sure that I could find a use for the kitchen sink. Having all this “stuff” is definitely not a bad thing. Being prepared during a trip can make or break that fishing experience. Something else that can make or break a fishing trip is how organized you keep all of your equipment. Now more than ever, it is extremely important to have a rhyme and reason to your fishing set ups. For me there are two main reasons to keep all of my equipment organized.

The first reason I find it important to stay organized is the efficiency that comes along with knowing where everything belongs. When I am out on the lake I want to be fishing as quick as possible. Any time I spend digging through compartments, trying to find something, I am not fishing. And on the flip side, when it is time to pack up and move, it goes much more smoothly when everything has a specific spot to go back to. A lot of time can be wasted when packing up looks like a game of Tetris. If you can designate everything a spot and remember where it goes when you are done, your fishing rig turns into a puzzle you have put together a thousand times and you could now pick out what you need blindfolded.

My second, and possibly the most important reason organization is at the top of my priorities is to keep your equipment safe. As fishermen we have a lot of money tied up in rods, tackle, electronics, and the latest must have gizmos, and we need to take steps to protect that investment. Lake Winnipeg is the place ice fishing equipment goes to die. If you want to test your stuff, book a trip and take it to the limit. My first couple trips to the big lake, I would keep all of my equipment inside my fish house sled and it never failed to be mass destruction inside there when I was done. After two trips I decided it was time to protect my investment better than I had been doing in the past. The best step to take is to get anything you don’t want broken out of your fish house sled. Bouncing over snow drifts and ice heaves for miles and miles at a time is very hard on electronics, heaters, and rods regardless of brand. The more stuff you can haul on or in your mode of transportation will greatly reduce the amount of damages. It doesn’t matter if you are using a snowmobile, ATV or side by side, use the suspension of your vehicle to protect your valuables. Utilizing the use of storage boxes and auger racks is a great way to securely fit all of your equipment on your rig. There are a lot of options for what to use to secure everything on your rig, but a great one stop shop for fishing storage would be Excel-Outdoors . They have trunks of all sizes to fit your needs as well as bucket racks and the Jaws of Ice auger rack to secure anything you need to get on and off the lake.

The great thing about rigging up your ride, is there are endless possibilities on how to get it the way you want it. Everyone can do as much as your imagination, handyman skills, and pocket book can take you. But taking any steps to organize your world will pay off big time in the long run. These ideas shouldn’t melt away with the ice either. Keeping your boats organized is just as important as your ice fishing ride. I hope all of you have a safe and successful end to your ice season. We’ll see you on the lake!!

I've always used wooden boards to save the knives, but thought I'd give this a try. It is way easier on knives than I thought and cleaning it is very simple. I see this product lasting a very long time and am very happy with it.

Excellent idea
Wow what a great product! They've taken the Sportsman cutting board line and added a hanging profile, garbage bag holders and knife slots perfect! The XTruder board can be mounted to just about any flat surface I'm thinking I'll mount mine to my fish house but the options are endless when it comes to mounting options; garage, deck, RV, picnic table, etc etc.... I might have to buy two! The nice thing is that it's removable so you can use it like a regular cutting board on a countertop if you like.

Cargo carriers offer expanded capacity for all your worldly things.  Anyone who has ever gone on a fishing or hunting trip knows that storage space is always at a premium.  Go to the shelves of Cabela's, or the web-pages of Gander Mountain and Camping World and you will be inundated with a variety of cargo carriers to pick from.  Until now, those cargo carriers have always meant throwing items onto the roof of your vehicle, or giving up you trailer hitch.  Enter Excel Outdoors.

Excel Outdoors has designed a simple system which utilizes otherwise unused space between the back of your vehicle and your boat or other trailer.  Tighten down a few bolts and off you go with your choice of more than 10 different accessory options.  Excel offers everything from traditional cargo carriers, such as boxes and racks, all the way to ergonomically designed cutting board stations, all using the same mounting system!  Take a look at their video HERE to get a better understanding.

Cargo carriers no longer need to be one size fits all and difficult to integrate.  Excel offers both a Vertical and Horizontal mounting system shown below.  So whether you use the side of your trailer, or the tongue of your trailer, your gear is always stored out of the way, giving you the freedom to go about your other business, and the capacity to still utilize your receiver to pull your boat or trailer!
